Sg defensive stocks in bargain

by ckchoy
table for illustration purpose only

Local market has been hit hard inline with global markets weaknesses, with regional markets eg China and HK are weaker.

refer to above indices marking table:
all the indices are at/near to this year low, eg STI current 3257 vs this year low 3236. It has corrected down 10% from the top (3615 ), and about 5% down vs last year close (3403).

SSE(Shanghai Composite Index) is the worst performing index with -22% from the top (3559 ) which in technically definition, it is in bear market (index down about 20 to 25% from the previous top )

HSI is the second worst with -15% from the top (33154) vs this year low (28242).

From TA point of view, many indices are in bearish sign which means traders tend to short more than long under such condition.

From FA point of view, markets are getting cheaper and attractive, investors tend to buy more.

Suggestions
Can start accumulate good quality defensive counters, eg Singtel (3.08 and below ), ThaiBev around 0.68. SGX around 7.11. Of course, there are more counters in bargain prices......

Hang Seng Index Personal View using TA

After hitting the top at 33510 on 29 Jan 2018, Hang Seng Index, HSI reversed down and hit a low at 28570 on 10 Feb before rebounding to a lower high to around level 32000. From here it is consolidating down again and a downtrend channel was drawn on the short term daily chart, connecting the top 33510 and the lower high of 28750. As of current 9 Apr 2018 2pm HSI traded around 30200 level, where it is around the mid point of consolidating channel.

For short term movement, traders can consider sell into strength when it traded near to channel resistance around 31000 and above; and buy for a short term rebound near support level around 29000 level and below. (refer to short term daily chart)

Critical point to watch, using HSI long term monthly chart as reference, if support level 28605 break down convincingly, it may hint HSI uptrend run has ended and downtrend to begin.

Short term news/situation to watch
1)Trade war, especially between US and China...(but my personal view is there will not be negative outcome afterall)
2)Tech counters to continue consolidating? The current bull market run from 1 Feb 2016 low to 2018 has been mainly driven by technology stocks or NASDAQ boom... if tech counters were to fall back for a correction phase, it will drive to a deep pull back or market correction usually about 20%.

by ckchoy

HSI powered up from low 19639 in Jun to top 24405 in 9 Sep represented a strong uptrend. From then it is stuck within the consolidation range around 24000 - 22967.
Watch the critical resistance 24000 and then top resistance at 24405 and critical support at 22770
to determine it will continue its uptrend or break down to downtrend.

HSI is the asia leading indicator, Asia's markets including STI may follow the correction coincide with 'Sell in May and go away' effect. Investors sell shares after XD in April/May.
If 21080 can hold, it may resume its uptrend channel established since mid Feb 2016.

Sell In May And Go Away? Remember to come back

'Sell In May And Go Away'? Remember to come back

by ckchoy

Any chances 'Sell In May And Go Away' will happen this year? No idea, but remember to come back.

If it does happen, be determined, it could be a good chance to buy stocks at bargain.

How low will it go ?
Not a mean to guess what level to reach by when, instead we can use TA support lines to set your entry points and have a plan. Let's say, Entered counter ABC at price X, we can set a stop loss about -5% from you entry point to protect your capital and the upside target can set at 10%, 20% or higher. The reward/risk ratio looks good and the upside/downside probability could be 70-30. Means it may have 70% upside chances and 30% downside chances.

What stocks to buy?
For stocks selection, let's look at STI component counters or blue chips first - a more conservative/defensive area.
Stock Market is still the best place for investment because statistic shows it - Gambling vs Investing odd

How sure?
There is no such thing as 100% sure in stock Market.  We must understand the Stock Market is dynamic. There are thousands of different combination of events may happen in the Market  as every participant(a unit of Market  may change his/her decision everyday, every minute, every second, every now and then. All those contribute Market movement.  Hence trading/investment is always a probability, as long as you spotted a good opportunity, go for it and at the same time set a cut loss point because no matter how good or accurate your homework, there are still some chances Market may turn against you, hence you need a cut loss point to protect your capital. Come back another time, trade/invest in this way you will be a winner in long run.

You see I use capital letter for Mr Market.  Yes it is a superior character, just treat it as God, what it tells you is always right.

Personal Market View - Penny Counters Run In 2013

by ckchoy

What a topic?! I've never thought that I will write something that is perceived as 'high risk' or 'dangerous' to personal wealth.  But, I realize that even though I try to avoid or stop mentioning it, beginners and newbies will find out and curious.  Hence instead of trying to hide it, why don't openly discuss it, so that more people especially newbies can get more exposure to learn the pros and cons and ultimately, make more than lose more.
It is like parents/school used to try to stop children from sex curiosity; now school realize they can't stop it and instead give early sex awareness/education. It is like instead of stopping citizen from gambling, we built two IRs and at the same time promote problem gambling awareness to public.......ok stop the long stories and nonsense and let's start.

I learnt the excitement of penny counters punting that was back in 1999. It was the year when Sg Penny Stocks Bubble happened. Almost all the penny counters (from A-Z) valuation ran up way to high, about 10 times their actual value, or P/E more than hundred, few hundreds or even thousands, and worse, with no fundamental like asset value to back them up. Example, a counter which doing business in book selling valued at about 10 cents was speculated/manipulated/played up to $1. Sesdaq (now renamed to Catalist) which measured the performance of counters small in size compared to Main Board, surged from about 30 to 200 within 2 - 3 months, a very short period.  The market volume was extremely high and almost all the people in the street joined the fun. Yes, it burst eventually.  Till now, this penny stocks bubble scenario has never happened since then. I think it is because human learn from mistakes, human learn from lessons and human become smarter.

Let's jump back from 1999 to recent 2 to 3 years, ( because I started my career as a remisier since 2 years plus ago, hence I have better market homework memory from 2011 till now )in 2011 and 2012 market volume (including all, ie blue chips, big caps, small caps penny) was relative low, average about 1 billion per day.  Yes, because of volume is not sustainable, hence penny stocks run was also not sustainable. In my memory, the best penny run period only last about 2 weeks then pause/stop/pull back or even followed by a deeper correction before continued its on and off pop up play.

Started about in mid of Nov 2012, penny stocks have been in focus again, prices are catching up ( to their P/E and asset values ) and most importantly volume has been building up and sustain. Market volume (including all, ie blue chips, big caps, small caps penny) is at average 4.8 billions per day (with record high at 12.2Bil a day), the volume is mostly generated by penny counters. This volume is relatively much higher compared to last 2 years, and also the longest run in my this 2 years experience, till now is about 3 months.  Looking forward, there are more reasons for the penny counters run to continue and will not die down so soon:
1) fresh and sideline cash is waiting to pour in anytime ( fear of being left out )
2) although the run-up has begun and into 3 months, but it looks like the trend is still in the beginning as many penny counters are still in cheap valuation be it using P/E or asset value as guideline (do your own homework).

Discussion:
A conservative/low risk taker sees penny stocks play as a high risk game. But do not forget the analogy, high risk usually will couple with high return. There are real examples which my colleagues or even your friends can make few hundreds thousands in short time let's say within month or months which is good enough to pay 10 years living cost. Ask yourself how many cases blue chips investors can become rich in short time?

A brave, high risk taker sees penny stocks play as a high return tool. But also must be mindful, win big in short time may also can easily lose big in short time.

So what should we do now? Buy/sell/avoid/chase/play/follow?
Instead of paying too much attention on whether which are high risk or low risk investment/games, understand what you are doing is more important. Because if you know what you are doing, you will know how to handle it, and in turn it will mean a low risk game to you.

Which penny counters to play, and how to play are not the topics here. If you are interested, soon you will learn how to play. Once you know how to play, it is whether you can execute it right. And once you have the theory and the practical, this is not the end, you still have to proof it you can do it consistently and finally be persistent  to your way.

Many people fail is not because of lack of knowledge nor lack of practical, they lack of persistent.

Personal Market View - HSI bottom out finally on 2012/05/18?

HSI bottom out finally on 2012/05/18?
by ckchoy

Today is an interesting day. Refer to chart 2 - intraday, where HSI hit a bottom around 18600 and rebound about 400 pts before dropping back slightly.  This is a scene that has not happened before recently. 2 questions;
1) Could the bottom found here? 2)Will the trend starts to reverse up?

Bottom out?
1) First sign met where HSI hit a bottom and rebound 400 pts and stayed, a very good sign
2) If market stay resilient ( refuse to drop much ) despite bad news - this will be another good sign

Trend will reverse up?
3) If market can slowly trend up and market volume must continue to build up and improve

What does it mean?
If the rebound is purely technical ( due to oversold ), it may not mean such bottom found then we must rush in to buy. Because the bottom might have found but still need time to build up a sustainable uptrend, and it may take time, let's say another month to 3 months.

What should we do now?
1) We can use the HSI 18600 as reference and buy when prices near there. For specific counters, we can use the lowest points as guideline, eg today lowest for Kepcorp 9.8, NOL 1.00, YZJ 0.91 etc.
2) For conservative investors, take your time to buy, if possible get as close as today's lowest point. Watch whether volume improve for better confirmation that market is ready to reverse up.

How about HSI breach down 18600 again?
Technically, we should cut loss. But do observe and come back because we may not be too far from the bottom.  A better ( but not easy to follow ) way is to use buy-cut-buy strategy

Personal Market View - HSI update 2012/05/07 and general market direction

HSI update 2012/05/07 and general market direction
by ckchoy

It has been a while, since my previous personal market view update. Let's recap.
Refer to chart 1(daily chart from Dec till now), HSI immediate bottom was formed around 17874 on 15 Dec 2011, very close to my spotted capitulation bottom around 17886 on 12 Dec 2011 ( refer to my call on HSI capitulation at 2011/12/15 10.39am ? ). True enough, HSI started to rebound strongly and on 8 Feb 2012, I spotted an euphoria sentiment where the chart showed market might have hit the immediate high around 21000 and hence I called for an immediate market top. ( refer to my call HSI inverse-capitulation at 2012/02/08 2.11pm ? ). But the actual top was formed around HSI 21800 on 20 Feb 2012, about 800 points above my call.  From there, market was trapped in a big range-bound. One discouraging sign is market volume remains sluggish.

chart 1

How do I spot capitulation bottom and inverse-capitulation top?
A slowly moving downtrend with low volume and couple with a sharp sell-down with high volume - very high chance this may mark a capitulation bottom has happened and market will start to reverse up.
Similarly, A slowly moving uptrend with low volume and couple with a sharp surge with high volume - very high chance this may mark a inverse-capitulation top, and market will start to reverse down.
The period for this pattern formed may be in weeks or months.
In summary, 3 key points
1) slow trending
2) low volume
3) couple with sharp following trend with high vol

What is the advantage of using this capitulation?
I'm a short term trader and have been trading market intraday. Short term trades tend to move fast. The decision making on buy/sell calls will be flipping very quick. I do not expect retail investors can follow the fast pace of short term trades. Hence I usually try to post where retail investors can have bigger reward/risk probability entry points, and capitulation bottom/top do offer a great opportunity to retail investors who may wish to bet on a higher probability handsome profit.

So what's next from here and what should we do?
If the immediate top formed where HSI hit 21800 is true, then market might have reversed down since 20 Feb 2012 and was since moving in downtrend. So, where it will stop?
Refer to intraday chart 2, where HSI today gapped down sharply and continued trend down. In between there looked like some small capitulation bottoms might have happened. But in bigger picture (refer to chart 1), a better reward/risk ratio may need to see whether HSI can hit below 20000, and couple with a sharp sell-down later.
My personal advice
1) For those have invested heavily, try to spare out 50% cash to reserve for a possible capitulation bottom happens before enter again.
2) For those have not invested and higher risk taker, can use 50% cash to start buying slowly now, reserve another 50% for a possible capitulation bottom.
3) For those have cash and not hurry, can wait for a capitulation bottom happens before showing your hands.

chart 2

What if?
There is no 'sure' case in market, even though you follow high probability calls, you may still need to prepare for the opposite side that may be against you.  But betting on a higher probability winning chance consistently over long run will ensure you making profit in long run.  For example, casino house is always win against gamblers because the betting odds are always in favour of house. In long run, casino house will be a winner and a gambler will be a loser.  So don't despair if you encounter any setback in market. As long as you always bet on higher winning odds and don't let 1 bad trade wipe out your capital, success will be with you.  Hence I would like to reiterate that 'cut loss' rule is very important, even though it is an 'easier said than done' case.

Personal Market View - HSI inverse-capitulation at 2012/02/08 2.11pm ?

HSI inverse-capitulation at 2012/02/08 2.11pm ?

by ckchoy

A shooting star was noticed at 2.11pm today at about HSI 21000. This may mean the continued uptrend started from Jan till now might have finally reached a short term peak.
Also noticed penny counters suddenly jumped up fast and furious. This may be a good chance for those big players who have been accumulated low to take profit now. If so market may head for a correction.

Suggest to take profit now especially penny counters that have run up too fast.

But if HSI breach up 21000 again, the uptrend will continue.

Mid term market still in uptrend, can consider keep buying on dips on asset related counters like properties and commodities.

Capricorn Effect?

HSI capitulation at 2011/12/15 10.39am ?
by ckchoy

HSI today morning opening gapped down with downtrend started to gain momentum and suddenly accerelated down fast and reach a bottom at 10.39am around 17886.
If the capitulation is real, expect HSI has hit immediate bottom and started to rebound from here.
The reward of catching a real capitulation is huge. Suggest to long from here but must set a stop loss if HSI breach down 17886 again.

HSI 14/9/2011 - Small Capitulation

by ckchoy

Afternoon HSI reopen gapped down slightly but later the downtrend accerelated fast and hit 18630 (-400).  About 300 pts above 18320.  18320 is a magic number where it is -25% from this year high of 24419, which it may represent HSI entering into bear market.
While trading on the index, I was sensing market's panic was peaked. Although volume not that high, it could be a small capitulation may have happen. HSI made a U-turn from here, market may have hit at least a short term bottom. Can buy.
Cut loss if HSI hit below 18320.

Personal Market View - Market sense 06/07/2011

Today morning marked a second day of profit taking but mostly limited to index stocks/blue chips. Counters especially banks are having a bigger pull back after strong run-up.  Kepcorp, Noble, Singtel are pulling back as well. Property counters remain firm.

Since yesterday, the interest on second liners and small caps have been getting stronger. There are many counters in play, just watch the top vol.

A mini bull run may be standing by once sidelines cash are coming back slowly.

Personal Market View - Stocks screen - Sarin, Biosensus

by ckchoy
Stocks screen - Sarin, Biosensus

**Sarin after breaking 0.66 resistance in 26 May, it has been in surging up trend. Today it continue makes new high and closed at 1.075. Looking back its price action from one week ago, there seemed to be accumulation activities below $1. May try your luck to buy below $1.  In a short period of time, so far this is a great winner stock, I'm not sure what is the downside risk and how high it will hit but it looks to have a great potential for more upside.(please plot your own graph, as I'm not a TA expert)

**Biosensus is another stock that bucked the profit taking trend today.  After hitting 1.28 in the afternoon, it ramped up steadily and closed near high at 1.345.  It broke the short term resistance at 1.31 hence in term of  TA, it is in good shape now and looking for more upside. The short term support/resistance is 1.28/1.41.  Keep an eye of this stock, monitor for a while and decide your entry point. (please plot your own graph, as I'm not a TA expert)

**The views are valid until before 2Q 2011 results announcemnt ( around Jul and Aug 2011). After that the views will be reviewed.
